“…Respecting the woman as an important and valuable human being and making certain that the woman’s experience while giving birth is fulfilling and empowering is not just a nice extra, it is absolutely essential as it makes the woman strong and therefore makes society strong.”
– Marsden Wagner
What is a doula?
|
A doula is a trained birth professional who provides non-medical support and guidance through pregnancy, birth and postpartum period. A doula can not replace an ob/gyn or midwife, rather complement their work by providing continuous support during birth, helping with pain management, and providing meaningful ways for family to support the birthing person.
According to American Pregnancy Association, the goal of a doula is to help experience a positive and safe birth. "Studies have shown that having a doula as a member of the birth team decreases the overall cesarean rate by 50%, the length of labor by 25%, the use of oxytocin by 40$ and requests for an epidural by 60%". |
